Have you ever considered why people look up to musicians? Some of the most followed social media accounts belong to musicians. Faceless corporations sponsor musicians to bring a human voice into their marketing-mix. Entrepreneurs compare building a business to a musician’s commitment to learning how to play an instrument. Even political leaders “fist pump” a successful, public endorsement from a musician…
Even though you realize this, you might be saying to yourself “if that’s true, why do so many people try to discourage me?”
I’ve been there and have an answer…
Its because they feel inferior in your presence. To compensate for that, they bully, demean and criticize you so that they can feel better. I do not wanna sound dramatic. Please bear with me and I will tie this together…
The reason people criticize you is because they seek to mimic your dedication and passion and apply it in their own life, but have failed…
Examples:
- People that let fear control their decisions, wonder how you developed the confidence to be on stage.
- People who do not apply themselves, revel in your ability to visualize what you want to do, commit to it, and persevere.
- People who don’t want to stand out from the crowd, admire how you pursue what you love and refuse to follow the “give-it-up-and-get-a-job” dogma.
You see, the sad truth is…
…Most people choose their path out of fear disguised as practicality. But you didn’t! That’s something to be proud of.

I promise you… the only reason society advances is when people like YOU ignore people like THEM
Look at yourself.
Consider yourself for the master that you are! Look at where you started compared to where you currently are. Do you realize how impressive your accomplishment is? You dedicated yourself to practicing, developing, and mastering you ability to play your instrument.
Even when you were frustrated, mad and fed up with where you were at. When everyone else feels the same way, but doesn’t do anything about it, you honor your commitment and persevere. In short, you are a badass; bold enough to pursue your ideas in the face of fear, negativity and constant criticism. Don’t ever let anybody stop you.
So, my fellow musicians, on behalf of everyone that you have inspired: Thank you!
